Sin Nombre Cave System – Cozumel Shoreline Cave
Sin Nombre is an underwater cave system located along the shoreline of Cozumel near the island’s cruise terminal area. Two cenotes exist within the Royal Village Shopping Center complex. The cenote closest to the road originally served as the primary entry point into the cave system.
Early Exploration
Exploration of the cave began during the late 2000s when divers started investigating the submerged passages accessible through the cenote. During this time, exploration and survey work were actively underway when a structure under construction nearby collapsed. Because of the proximity of the building to the cave system, access to the cave was restricted. As a result, exploration efforts at Sin Nombre were halted.
The discoveries made while exploring this cave are part of the broader effort to connect cave systems beneath Cozumel, described in Rob Neto’s book Beneath the Jungle of Cozumel.
Rediscovery and Renewed Exploration
More than a decade later, another opening to the cave system was discovered, allowing divers to once again access the passages. Exploration has since resumed, although under the direction of a different team of divers.
The cave system is currently being explored, surveyed, and mapped. Much of the original line that had been placed during the early exploration period has been revisited and resurveyed. New passages have also been discovered, expanding the known extent of the cave.
Geological Context
Like many caves beneath Cozumel, Sin Nombre formed within the island’s limestone bedrock through karst dissolution. These caves originally formed when sea levels were much lower and the passages were dry. As sea levels rose following the last ice age, the caves flooded, creating the submerged cave systems found on the island today. Although individual caves may appear isolated, they are all part of the same geological processes that shaped the underground landscape of Cozumel.
