Beneath the Jungle of Cozumel

Most visitors to Cozumel realize that beneath the jungle and limestone surface lie ancient underground Mayan rivers. These passages were once exposed to air and contain millions of speleothems (cave formations). The passages have since filled with water, but they aren’t lost to the world.

Background

Divers began exploring the caves beneath the jungle of Cozumel in the late 1980s and early 1990s. There were two major cave systems explored at that time – Aerolito and Cueva Quebrada. At the time, Aerolito was documented to have 20,000 ft/ 6,100 m of passages, and Cueva Quebrada was documented to have 29,000 ft/8,840 m of passages. Today, Aerolito is approaching 30,000 ft/9,150 m and Cueva Quebrada is approaching 100,000 ft/30,500 m of passages.

The exploration is far from complete.

Why This Exploration Matters

Connecting major cave systems expands geographic understanding and contributes to the broader mapping of one of the world’s most significant underwater environments. It also helps to preserve the fragile ecosystem that lies beneath the jungle of Cozumel

This account captures the human effort behind that achievement – the planning, setbacks, recalculations, and eventual breakthroughs.

The Story Behind the Book

Deep beneath the jungle of Cozumel lies an extensive underwater cave system stretching for miles.

Beneath the Jungle of Cozumel: Connecting the Crowns documents the real expedition to connect two major cave systems – a logistical, physical, and psychological undertaking that required precision, persistence, and trust.

This is not speculative adventure. It is documented exploration shaped by real-world conditions and the realities of technical cave diving.
